In the latest Elisa Contemporary Art exhibit, we see the influences of Pop Art from the 1960’s and explore how five contemporaryartists bring modern heroes to life in a whole new way. You’ll see Superheroes including Superman, Wonder Woman and CaptainAmerica and meet some new characters.

Two Special Events:

A Valentine’s Day Toast to your Favorite Hero on Saturday, February 11th from 5-7pm

Two Art Workshops for Children (age 5+). Each workshop will be led and inspired by the work of one artist.

Saturday, February 25th from 1-3pm Superhero Collage paintings with Oliver Peterson. (ages 5+)

Sunday March 25th from 1-3pm. Superhero illustrations with Jerome Walford (ages 8+)

New Charter school in the Bronx

A new Charter school is opening up in District 10 in the Bronx, Tech International Charter School. TI will focus on technology and international connections with a strong emphasis on inclusiveness for immigrant families, English Language Learners and Special Education students. It will begin with 106 (changed from 88) sixth graders (hopefully 132) in the Fall of 2012 and then increase one grade per year. TI will look to expand its charter in Fall of 2013 to evolve into a grade 6-12 school.

Sabrina Gshwandtner introduces photography and textile processes to interpret the winter landscape.

Participants learn about the artist’s technique of combining 16mm film with quilt-making, photographing nature and then using their images with different quilting patterns to create their own photo-based quilts. In this series of fun, community-based collaborative activities, participants work alongside Adam Parker Smith to create colorful paintings of large plants and flowers from life, using a variety of media. Over the course of three weeks, the artist collects, cuts and assembles the paintings from each workshop into a collaged bouquet. This drop-in program also takes place on January 29 and February 5. Children ages five and older welcome with an adult. Free with admission to the grounds.

Black History Month – Woodlawn Cemetery Hosts Talk about Harlem Renaissance‏

On February 26 in celebration of Black History Month, author A’Lelia Bundles will speak at Woodlawn Cemetery about her forthcoming book Joy Goddess: A’Lelia Walker and the Harlem Renaissance. A’Lelia Walker, the daughter of the first African American millionaire Madam C.J. Walker, hosted some of the most memorable soirees of the Harlem Renaissance at her salon, The Dark Tower. There she welcomed Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, CVV, Florence Mills, Bert Williams, Paul Poiret and other celebrities, musicians, actors, artists and writers of the era. Bundles’ talk will give fascinating insight into A’Lelia Walkers role in founding the hair care line that made her mother famous and her patronage of the arts, as well as her glamorous lifestyle and renowned parties. Woodlawn is a must-visit destination during Black History Month. From its founding in 1867, Woodlawn has been the final resting place of a number of prominent African Americans, including:

· Madame C.J. Walker and A’Lelia Walker

· Ralph Cooper, the originator and master of ceremonies at the Apollo Theater in Harlem.

· Countee Cullen, famed poet of the Harlem Renaissance

· Matthew Henson, the only American to accompany Admiral Perry on his North Pole expedition

· George E. Haynes, the first African American to earn a Ph.D. from Columbia and a charter member of the NAACP

If you didn’t already know, the NYC Kids Food Fest is this weekend in Bryant Park! There are tons of awesome shows and classes to chose from on Saturday and Sunday January 21st and 22nd. Special programming includes live performances, hands-on cooking classes, celebrity chef and product demonstrations, tasting sessions, and more! Taste the fun from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm both Saturday and Sunday.

General Admission is FREE, but there are fees for the classes and shows.
