Did you know that Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, is the final resting place of more Titanic passengers—including the most famous couple to go down with the ship—than any other site in the United States!? As the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic approaches, visit Woodlawn Cemetary for an interesting adventure.
· Isidor and Ida Straus—Ida was one of the few first-class women who died on the Titanic. She perished alongside her husband, Isidor Straus, the owner of Macy’s department store. According to survivors, Isidor refused to board a lifeboat until all women and children were saved, and Ida refused to leave without him, saying, “We have lived together for many years. Where you go, I go.”
· Col. Archibald Gracie IV—a survivor of the sinking, Col. Gracie IV was hailed as a hero for his efforts to help many passengers to the lifeboats. He was swept off the Titanic as it sank, but survived by standing knee deep in water on an overturned lifeboat. He died nine months after the disaster, never having fully recovered from the physical trauma of that night. His funeral at Woodlawn was attended by members of his regiment together with many fellow Titanic survivors.
· Henry Sleeper Harper and Myra Haxton Harper—Henry was the director of Harper & Brothers Publishing House and he had an earlier narrow escape in 1902 when a ship on which he was sailing rammed an iceberg. His luck held on the Titanic as well, and he, his wife, and his Pekinese, named Sun Yat Sen, all were able to get on a lifeboat. Sun Yat Sen was one of only two dogs to survive the sinking.
The Cemetery is open free of charge every day from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. for self-guided tours, and on Sunday, April 29 Woodlawn is hosting a special Titanic event, which will visit each of the memorials honoring Woodlawn’s 12 victims and survivors.

SUN, APRIL 22 PERFORMANCE: BRANCH DANCES AT WAVE HILL
Wave Hill has commissioned award-winning choreographer Merián Soto to return to the Bronx, her artistic home, to develop a site-specific project during a one-year residency. Soto’s project is Wave Hill’s 2011–2012 generated@wavehill commission, a program that provides artists the opportunity to create temporal work for the grounds. Through the summer of 2012, Soto will develop and perform four outdoor performances, one each season. Branch Dances at Wave Hill performances are slow and meditative, yet powerfully communicative. Soto works with her team of dancers― Beau Hancock,Jumatatu Poe, Olive Prince and Marion Ramirez―and percussionist Harold E. Smith, to connect body, mind, place and elements to stillness. She selects locations that respond to seasonal aspects of the landscape, taking advantage of Wave Hill’s brilliant foliage, sweeping vistas and sculptural trees. Audiences are invited to slow down and enter a state of heightened receptivity to nature. Visitors who attend the whole series will gain an enhanced experience of seasonal change, as well as a deeper understanding of body and self as part of nature. Free, and admission to the grounds is free all day thanks to the generosity of Target.

Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum will jump-start the Easter season with its annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 31, 2012 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is one day when it’s okay to put all your eggs in one basket! Children from 2 to 12 years old will hunt for eggs in the formal garden, tap their talent at arts and crafts tables, and have their photo taken with the Easter Bunny. Crafts include making tissue paper flowers, painting wooden eggs, paper bag decorating, and face painting. Artists Sandi Lusk and Woody Brundage of the Westchester Square Zerega Improvement Organization Inc., a 20-year-old nonprofit group of artists who volunteer their time to provide arts and crafts activities to children in the northeast Bronx, will paint intricate designs on children’s faces with safe, hypoallergenic, non-toxic supplies. Teen volunteers from St. Catharine’s Academy in the Bronx and from Pelham High School will be available to assist the children.
Nine hunts for three different age groups — 2-3 year-olds, 4-6 year-olds, and 7-12 year-olds — will run every 15 minutes from 10:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. There will be egg spoon races and an egg toss on the field outside the back gate of the formal garden. Guests should bring their own baskets. Light refreshments will be offered. $12 for children 2-12; $10 for members.
“Our annual Easter Egg Hunt is a tradition that is really special to us at Bartow-Pell,” says executive director Ellen Bruzelius. “It gives us an opportunity to share the beauty of our grounds as we welcome spring. And what a joy it is to see hundreds of children searching for Easter eggs and enjoying crafts and games.”
Hundreds of people usually attend the Easter Egg Hunt so registration is strongly advised. Parking, which is free, will be at the Pelham Bay and Split Rock golf courses across from Bartow-Pell.
To register, call 718-885-1461 or email info@bpmm.org. For directions and to learn more about the Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum, visit www.bpmm.org. For information about the Westchester Square Zerega Improvement Organization, Inc., visit www.wsbid.org/wszio/ or find them on Facebook.
Mansion tours will start at 2:15 p.m., after the last egg hunt is over. Mansion admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and students, and free for children under six.
