Do’s and Don’ts of Coats and Car Seats + Diono Car Seat Giveaway

As this polar vortex makes up for the warm Christmas we had, the talk of coats and car seats makes its way back to the parenting conversation. We know it’s part of our parental instinct to want to keep our children’s coat on in the winter, especially when you don’t have time to heat the car up. However, if your child is still in a car seat, it’s important you follow the rules of car seat safety to insure your little one is protected. We’re sharing a list of Do’s and Don’ts from Allana Pinkerton, Global Safety Advocate for Diono. After you’ve studied the list, see below for a giveaway of the Diono Radian®RXT car seat that we are giving away to one lucky Bronxmama reader.

  2. These are great tips. I’ve been following them for as long as I can remember and adamant that my family Follows them when caring for my daughter. They always question why I never buckle her in with a coat on. I also share in discuss with others.

  3. I was aware of the importance of not wearing a winter coat but I didn’t even think of the putting the coat on backwards after our little guy is buckled. I’ll definitely pass that idea on to family and friends.

  4. Absolutely aware and follow and I do talk with friends and family.

  5. I was unaware of the risks that wearing thick winter outerware presents when buckled into a car seat. It is just always a hassle putting on and taking off when you live in such fridged temperatures. Thank you for the valuable safety awareness!

  6. I think car seat safety is super important. I spread the word about not wearing coats in a carseat all the time. I share this information with friends who have littles in carseats, friends who do not yet have children, grandparents, and babysitters! I have also shared the information with my own children so they know the routine and safety behind the routine.

  7. These are great tips! Car safety is so important. Would love to win this! This is such a great and super safe car seat.

  8. No, I was not aware of the safety issues regarding coats and car seats! Thanks for the important information!

  9. I have seen these tips before and aware of what is safe and not safe to use while strapped in a car seat. We usually tuck in a warm blanket after the little guy is strapped in.

  10. You can wear long underwear, then clothes with fleece over the top – as long as you dont have to loosen the straps to put the kid in, then its ok.

Instead of a coat, use a double layer carseat poncho on-top, or a coat on backwards (over the harness after its buckled tight), or just pile on blankets and when you get where you are going (the car will be warmed up at that point), get out of the carseat and put the coat on and then open the doors.
