January Winter Workspace Workshops at Wave Hill

unnamed (24)This winter, Glyndor Gallery is transformed into studios for New York-area artists to create new artwork in the context of the garden. Artists share their studio practice with visitors through small, occasional workshops. There is still some space in each of the January workshops; register now if you would like to be sure there is room for you to attend.

Fay Ku: Ink and Color—A Gongbi-inspired Workshop
SUNDAY, JANUARY 18, 1–4PM
Gongbi, a traditional style of Chinese painting, relies on highly detailed brushstrokes to produce a realistic image. Learn how artist Fay Ku uses this style in her artwork and then explore introductory Gongbi techniques in the studio. Participants will be instructed in simple drawing exercises, ink handling and color methods.

Nicolás Dumit Estévez: Sounding Silence and the Winter Walk
SUNDAY, JANUARY 24, 1–3PM
Join artist Nicolás Dumit Estévez in an experiential workshop beginning with a mute stroll around the Wave Hill winter landscape. Also in silence, use the sounds, impressions and mental images collected on the walk to create an individual or collaborative mixed-media artwork in the warmth of the art studio. Oral communication is reestablished toward the end of the session, in time for a conversation on the work generated and on the overall experience. Hot ginger tea and cookies will be served.

Alisha Wessler: Hybrid Objects–Amulets, Talismans & Curiosities
SUNDAY, JANUARY 31, 1–4PM
Explore the history of amulets, talismans, and curiosities found in Wunderkammern (or cabinets of curiosities) with Winter Workspace artist Alisha Wessler. Focus on objects that blur the boundaries between artificialia and naturalia. Using your own concoction of personal objects brought from home and natural elements gathered from Wave Hill, learn sculptural techniques to create your own hybrid object of wonder.
