Review: Holiday Train Show at the New York Botanical Garden

By: Dalilah Smith-Santos

This Veteran’s day my daughter Dahlia and I had the opportunity to check out New York Botanical Gardens 22nd Annual Train Show before it opens to the public this Saturday.  Dahlia was quite impressed with all of the hard work it took to make all of the replicas such as Yankee Stadium and the George Washington Bridge and she had to fight the temptation to touch all of the model trains like the mini metro north, we were told by a member of the Applied Imagination team that some of the models can take about a month to create.  Her favorite part of the exhibit was the mini Santa Claus and getting the chance to meet Bronx News 12 Reporter Brittany Miller, my favorite part was watching her face as she experienced this beautiful exhibit for the first time!

The New York Botanical Garden’s ‘Holiday Train Show®’ opens to the public on Saturday, November 16, 2013 and runs through Sunday, January 12, 2014

Now in its 22nd year, the ‘Holiday Train Show’ is a magical extravaganza showcasing model trains traversing replicas of New York landmarks from the Botanical Garden’s collection of more than 140 structures – all created from plant materials such as leaves, twigs, bark, berries, seeds, pine cones, nuts, and pods. There are more than a dozen trains running on nearly a quarter mile of track in the warmth of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory. In addition to favorite replicas such as the Empire State Building, the original Yankee Stadium, and the Brooklyn Bridge, this year ‘The Artist’s Studio’ returns by popular demand, featuring a behind-the-scenes look at how the replicas are constructed by designer Paul Busse’s team at Applied Imagination.
