Spring for the Bronx Action Tours

SATURDAY, APRIL 6, Hiking Tour

Hike through Woodlawn Cemetery, one of the largest cemeteries in New York, designated a National Historic Landmark. Pay tribute to illustrious Bronxites and notables while on a guided tour to the gravesites of Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Lionel Hampton, Celia Cruz, Herman Melville and more.
Then head to the historic Van Cortlandt Park and hike the Putnam Trail, where the New York Central Railroad’s Putnam Division once ran. Learn about the Van Cortlandt and Vanderbilt families and what the park has in common with New York’s famous Grand Central Station.
The day ends with a hike around Hunter Island on the Kazmiroff Nature Trail in Pelham Bay Park, the largest park in the five boroughs! This trail allows visitors to venture into the island’s wetland border, rocky shore and interior forest with a view of the Long Island Sound.
Experience the ecology, industry and history of the South Bronx waterfront as the Bronx River Alliance guides you, while padding your own canoe!
Disembark right on the grounds of the New York Botanical Garden, where the group will break for lunch on their beautiful grounds. Lunch can be purchased at the NYBG café or pack a picnic!
The adventure continues on to the Garden’s Orchid Show, an exhibition that celebrates the storied flower in all of its amazing forms with thousands of brilliantly colored orchids.
Spend the day on City Island, a small community located at the edge of New York City just beyond Pelham Bay Park. The island is surrounded by the waters of western Long Island Sound and Eastchester Bay.
The fun begins with a guided trolley tour throughout the island followed by a visit to the Nautical Museum dedicated to City Island’s past and present nautical heritage including the contributions of famous yacht builders and sail makers.
Visit a local art gallery and hear from a long-time resident and professional photographer before breaking for a light lunch (meal not included in registration fee).
End the day aboard the 65-foot Island Current* and fish for blues and striped bass.
