The holiday season shimmers all around us, with Chanukah almost completed and Christmas and Kwanzaa – and New Year’s! – approaching.  Temper the frenzied pace and crowded streets with a day at Wave Hill. Absorb the stately feel of Wave Hill House at one or more Holiday Weekend Workshops, a chance for your family to create its own uniquely personal gift for your home or that of a friend.  And you’ll feel right at home Sunday afternoon at the open house for an exhibit of the fine work created by participants—both grownups and children! — in the workshops

  • SAT, DECEMBER 11    FAMILY ART PROJECT―IT’S A WRAP

It’s a Wrap/Es un regalo

Make one-of-a-kind wrapping paper by printing repeated patterns inspired byWave Hill’s stately evergreens and other natural elements of the season. Free, and admission to the grounds is free until noon.

  • SAT, DECEMBER 11    HOLIDAY WORKSHOP―AMARYLLIS GIFT POT

Amaryllis bulbs offer dramatic blossoms for the winter windowsill. Pot up a bulb in a terracotta pot, cover it with a saucer and decorate the “kit” for a beautiful, unique and environmentally-friendly gift. Care instructions provided. Creative assistance offered by Assistant Director of Public Programs Laurel Rimmer and Horticultural Interpreter Charles Day. Children eight and older welcome with an adult. $15 Member/$20 Non-member per project. Registration not required. First come, first served while supplies last.

Craft one-of-a-kind holiday decorations using fresh greens harvested fromWave Hill’s extensive gardens. Each participant designs a verdant wreath or swag accented with natural materials and elegant accessories. Assistant Director of Public Programs Laurel Rimmer and Horticultural Interpreter Charles Day demonstrate simple floral techniques and provide plenty of materials to fuel your creative spirit. Children eight and older welcome with an adult.  $25 Member/$30 Non-member per project. Registration not required. First come, first served while supplies last.

Explore the magic of felting and create handmade felted soaps. Artist Teresa Berger guides you through the process of felting, the art of transforming wool into dense, colorful cloth. Roll up your sleeves and practice bonding and shrinking the fibers using water, heat and agitation. Gift giving never felt so good! Children eight and older welcome with an adult. $9 Member/$12 Non-member per project. Registration not required. First come, first served while supplies last.

Explore Wave Hill’s woodlands and gardens and discover the world of insects, berries, trees, birds and their fascinating habitats on these naturalist-led walks. Ideal for ages five and older and their curious adult companions. Rain, snow or shine, so dress for the weather! Space is limited; registration recommended, online, by calling 718.549.3200 x305 or at the Perkins Visitor Center when you next visit. Online reservations close at 4PM the Saturday before the walk. A 28-acre public garden and cultural center overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades, Wave Hill’s mission is to celebrate the artistry and legacy of its gardens and landscapes, to preserve its magnificent views, and to explore human connections to the natural world through programs in horticulture, education and the arts.

HOURS Open all year, Tuesday–Sunday and many major holidays: 9AM–4:30PM. Closes 5:30PM, April 14–October 14.

ADMISSION  $8 adults, $4 students and seniors 65+, $2 children 6–18. Free Tuesday and Saturday mornings until noon. Free to Members and children under 6.
