On September 9, Paul Strand: The Mexican Portfolio opens at the Bronx Museum of the Arts. On view through January 2, 2011, the exhibition will feature twenty striking images of the people, landscape, architecture and religious objects that photographer Paul Strand encountered when visiting Mexico in 1932-33. One of the most highly acclaimed photographers of the twentieth century, Strand traveled all over the world, and his involvement with Mexican art, politics, and society enabled him to capture a realistic and vivid portrait of Mexico at the time. Families can practice their dots and dabs this weekend at a naturally creative Family Art Project inspired by that master Monet. Perfectly complementing that painterly activity, the Family Concert performed by the Sinfonietta of Riverdale on Sunday afternoon gives young and older a chance to enjoy a different kind of inspiration. Add more Stories in the Garden Tuesday morning, and Family Yoga Friday morning, and you’ll find plenty to satisfy both preschoolers and school-aged children.

I took advantage of a beautiful summer day and took my girls to The New York Botanical Garden while my son, Alex was in summer school. We experienced the Edible Garden. The cook from Growing Chefs made an apricot parfait. Alyson had a very, very, very hard time sitting still for this demo but nonetheless Becky and I enjoyed our first cooking show. The Sinfonietta of Riverdale, conducted by Mark Mandarano, will perform a concert that is sure to delight the whole family on on Sunday, September 19th at 2pm, at Wave Hill in the Bronx. They will perform Beethoven, Mozart, Sekles, Honegger and Schuller under the direction of Mark Mandarano.
Then in October, The Four Nations Ensemble will perform masterworks by Bach, Handel, Telemann and Couperin (This is recommended for older children and those who are already interested in classical music =)). Read more »
